Essentialy, a marriage can be said to be legally valid if it fulfills 2 (two) conditions, both material and formal requirements. In Indonesia, the conditions for the validity of a marriage are regulated in Law Number: 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage. In this Law, precisely in Article 2, it is regulated that a marriage is legally valid if it is carried out according to the religious laws and beliefs of each party getting married and is recorded according to statutory regulations. Marriages that have been carried out in accordance with their respective religions/beliefs are considered valid based on certain religious rules, but if they have not been registered at the authorized government office (either the Religious Affairs Office/KUA for those who are Muslim or the Civil Registry Office/KCS for those outside of Muslim), then the marriage has not been recognized as valid by the state of Indonesia.
For marriages of Muslim couples that have been registered at the Religious Affairs Office/KUA, the KUA will issue an official document called a Marriage Book, while for non-Muslim marriages that have been registered at the Civil Registry Office/KCS, the KCS will issue a Marriage Certificate.
For foreign citizens who wish to get married in Indonesia, the documents required are a photocopy of their passport, and a Certificate of No Impediments (CNI) issued by your embassy in Jakarta.
For those of you who are foreign nationals who want to get married in Indonesia, you shall have the same religion as your partner. If your partner is Muslim then you must convert to the Muslim religion, and will get a certificate of conversion to Islam, this is a provision that applies in Indonesia.
